Microsoft Corp.'s WebTV Networks Inc. unit plans to take the wraps off
an updated version of its Web access service designed for the television
on Tuesday - a day after its first major competitor unveils its own
approach for integrating the Web with the television.
NetChannel Inc., a start-up headed by former Yahoo! Inc. Chief Executive
Officer Philip Monego Sr., this week plans to introduce a TV-based
service that focuses on using agent technology and personalization to
present customized information via TV screens. The NetChannel service
also will offer an offline programming guide that can
retrieve TV schedule information from the Web late at night and store
the data for later viewing. With the programming guide, users who click
on a program listing can be automatically connected to its corresponding
channel on their televisions.
"This is all about the TV and extending the features of the TV," Monego
said in an attempt to distinguish his company from WebTV's early focus
on Web surfing. "The goal here is to use the Internet as a resource, not
as a destination."
The company will offer its service over devices built and sold under the
RCA brand name by Thomson Consumer Electronics. According to Monego, his
company's goal in its first Christmas selling season is to post a higher
volume of sales than WebTV did during its first Christmas season last
year, when it sold 35,000 units.
WebTV, which sells its online service under the brand names of Sony
Electronics Inc. and Philips Consumer Electronics Co., has about 135,000
subscribers. Officials declined to discuss details of the new features.
