Hello everybody!

I hope this is not quite off-topic of this list (this message has been
crossposted, origin at news:alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt)

I am gathering information on possible project (if it requires too much
effort/money/equipment I'll just drop it) of portable (or at least
stand-alone - addition to home HI-FI system) MP3 player off the computer
CD-ROM disk.

The point is, that MP3 format gives low-cost and high capacity music
recording - over 10 hours (high quality 112kbps stereo stream) up to over
180 hours (low quality 8kbps mono stream) on one MP3 compressed CD-ROM.
However, most of the people (excluding me - my home PC is running 24H a day)
won't run their PC just to hear their favourite Genesis album...

Therefore I am especially interested in the following topics:

1. ATAPI interface of CD-ROM drives (approximately x4 or x6 speed. x1 would
be enough to support stream, but seek will be considerably slow) - wiring,
timing, protocols, possibilities of connection to microcontrolers (8*51,
PIC, etc)
2. Low level CD access - reading of "flat" (no subdirectories), 8.3 names
CD-ROM disk (both "silver" CD and CD-R and eventually CD-RW)
3. Hardware MP3 decoders - cheap DSP or off-the-shelf solutions
4. High performance microprocessor systems (to glue and control all the
above) - perhaps 8x251/XA/PIC devices.

Well, I am definitely NOT thinking about putting small industrial PC with
HDD/FDD into my design - this would be too sesnitive and "BOOT-UP" of player
could be annoying. I know I could use solid-state FLASH disks, but this is
not the point...

As I am relatively new to the brand, any help, suggestions or xrefs is
welcome. Please, send replies to my E-Mail account, perhaps with 'Project
MP3' in subject to sort mail more easily. If people would be interested in
this subject, I might start a sort of forum to swap ideas...

Thanks in advance,
Paul
